Peer Specialist Job Description

Summary
The Peer Recovery Specialist provides peer support and care coordination services to adults with behavioral health needs, including mental health and substance use disorders. They are part of a multidisciplinary team aimed at outreach, engagement, and system support. The role involves serving as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator by sharing personal experiences to encourage treatment seeking, prevent relapse, and promote long-term recovery.

Responsibilities

  1. Support adults in mental health and substance use challenges in outpatient settings.
  2. Empower individuals to direct their own recovery process.
  3. Assist clients in identifying strengths, abilities, needs, and recovery goals.
  4. Promote use of community resources and support systems.
  5. Foster a sense of wellness, self-worth, and personal control.
  6. Serve as a role model, sharing experiences to inspire hope.
  7. Model recovery processes and coping skills.
  8. Assist with orientation for new clients.
  9. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed care.
  10. Support clients in reconnecting with family and friends and improving relationships.
  11. Co-facilitate peer support meetings.
  12. Foster spiritual connections and participation in support groups.
  13. Adhere to policies and participate in team meetings.
  14. Maintain accurate documentation and uphold confidentiality.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Personal recovery from mental health/substance use condition and experience with services.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to complete certification as a peer recovery specialist.
  • At least 2 years of sobriety or abstinence.

Additional Requirements

  • Self-identified current or former user of mental health or co-occurring services.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing.
  • Training in behavioral health, substance use, or related topics.

Skills and Abilities

  • Valid driver’s license and transportation.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with peers.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Recognition of relapse triggers and signs.
  • Willingness to learn computer skills for documentation.
