Position: Peer Recovery Support Specialist I

Department: MNTP/Program Development

Reports To: Program Supervisor

Position Summary

Join a dedicated team of substance use disorder treatment professionals! We are seeking a Peer Support Specialist to join Tarzana Treatment Centers’ Mobile Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) team.

The incumbent will work in a fast-paced environment as part of a multidisciplinary team including counselors, nurses, and medical providers. Responsibilities include assisting staff and patients in the OTP clinic, enrolling new patients, working with established patients, and other duties assigned by the program supervisor. Awareness of medications for addiction treatment and substance use disorder treatment is preferred. Those with lived experience are encouraged to apply.

Salary Range

$25.50 - $28 Per Hour DOE

Hours

Residential/Inpatient: 12 hours per day / 3 days per week

Outpatient: 8 hours per day / 5 days a week

Categories of Duties
  • Provide patient orientation, including unit tour, issuing patient handbook, group schedule, and linens.
  • Assist in data entry into Avatar for admissions and discharges.
  • Supervise and monitor patient activities to ensure safety and accurate census counts.
  • Conduct body and property searches in accordance with policies and maintain certification.
  • Perform UA testing and maintain certification.
  • Assist with medication calls.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the unit and oversee patient tidiness.
  • Support the integration of health services across mental health, SUD, housing, and primary care.
  • Encourage patient engagement and self-management to promote wellness and recovery.
  • Educate patients on coping strategies and problem-solving.
  • Help patients identify strengths and build resilience.
  • Assist in developing community living skills and utilizing community resources.
  • Attend trainings, staff meetings, and pursue ongoing professional development.
  • Communicate effectively with staff regarding patient progress.
  • Conduct self professionally in dress, language, attitude, and behavior.
  • Support the agency's philosophy and objectives.
  • Conduct alarm checks during shift changes.
  • Provide patient escort and transportation as needed.
  • Offer ongoing recovery support in areas such as 12 steps, housing, vocational training, and employment.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality per policies and laws.
  • Support patients in developing independent behaviors based on choice.
  • Support patients through both ordinary and extraordinary times.
  • Assist patients in overcoming fears and negative self-talk, and in problem-solving.
  • Act as a role model for wellness and recovery, providing mutual and respectful peer support.
  • Understand and abide by the code of ethics and patient rights.
  • Share personal recovery stories appropriately to promote hope and recovery.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or higher
  • Class C or B License (if required)
  • Computer literate
  • Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification (PSSC)
  • Minimum 1 year experience in behavioral healthcare and/or peer support services
