Job summary

Serving Children and Adults in Need, Inc. (SCAN) is seeking a Peer Recovery Support Specialist to provide non-clinical, peer-based recovery support for youth and families in the Families United Program.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team to help participants navigate behavioral health systems, access resources, and build recovery capital using trauma-informed, youth-guided, and family-centered approaches.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; related degree preferred.
  • Texas peer support certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
  • Lived experience with recovery and commitment to recovery principles.
  • Minimum of one year of peer support/mentoring experience preferred.
  • Valid TX driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must complete required background checks and other employment requirements.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and recovery resources.

Responsibilities

  • Establish trusting relationships with youth, young adults, and families.
  • Provide peer recovery support services that promote hope and wellness.
  • Develop individualized recovery plans alongside clinical teams.
  • Offer mentoring, coaching, and emotional support.
  • Help participants identify strengths and overcome barriers to recovery.
  • Assist accessing behavioral health services and community resources.
  • Facilitate recovery groups and life skills activities.
  • Educate about recovery resources and relapse prevention.
  • Collaborate with counselors, clinicians, and community partners.
  • Conduct outreach and follow-up to sustain engagement.

Position Description

Position: Peer Recovery Support Specialist - Full-Time, 40 hours per week

Position Summary

The Peer Recovery Support Specialist provides non-clinical, peer-based recovery support services to youth, young adults, and their families participating in SCAN's Families United Program. Drawing upon lived experience with recovery from a mental health and/or substance use condition, the Peer Recovery Support Specialist inspires hope, promotes self-advocacy, and assists participants in achieving their recovery goals. Working as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team, the Peer Recovery Support Specialist helps participants navigate behavioral health systems, access community resources, build recovery capital, and maintain long-term recovery using trauma-informed, youth guided, and family-centered approaches.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Establish trusting, supportive relationships with youth, young adults, and families through shared lived experience and recovery principles.
  • Provide individual and group peer recovery support services that promote hope, resilience, self-determination, and wellness.
  • Assist participants in developing individualized recovery plans that complement their clinical treatment plans.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, encouragement, and emotional support throughout the recovery process.
  • Help participants identify personal strengths, overcome barriers to recovery, and develop healthy coping and life skills.
  • Assist participants in accessing behavioral health services, primary healthcare, housing, education, employment, transportation, vocational services, and other community resources.
  • Facilitate recovery support groups, wellness activities, life skills training, and recovery education workshops.
  • Educate participants and families about recovery resources, mutual support groups, wellness planning, relapse prevention, and community supports.
  • Collaborate with counselors, case managers, medical providers, family members, schools, and community partners to promote coordinated, recovery-oriented care.
  • Conduct outreach and follow-up contacts with participants to encourage continued engagement in treatment and recovery services.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a human services field preferred.
  • Current certification as a Certified Peer Specialist, Certified Recovery Support Peer Specialist, or other recognized Texas peer support credential, or the ability to obtain certification within the timeframe required by the employer.
  • Lived experience with recovery from a mental health and/or substance use condition and a demonstrated commitment to recovery principles.
  • Minimum of one year of experience providing peer support, mentoring, advocacy, or recovery services preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Valid TX Driver's license, good driving record, and reliable transportation required.
  • Must successfully complete required background checks and other employment requirements.
  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented systems of care, trauma-informed practices, motivational approaches, and community resources.

Salary range:

$17.00 - $18.27/hour depending on degree, experience, certifications, and qualifications.
