Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) Lakewood Campus is seeking a Peer Mentor in the Academic Experiences department to proactively support students by fostering open dialogue, promoting belonging, and maintaining spaces for experiential learning and engagement. Peer Mentors will help plan events, assist with HIPs integration, and collaborate with staff across Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.

This is a student employee, work-study position with hours Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM–10:00 PM, at RRCC

Qualifications

Job Summary:

The Academic Experiences department at RRCC is seeking a Peer Mentor to proactively support fellow students by fostering open and respectful dialogue, exemplify the spirit of belongingness, and maintain shared spaces dedicated to experiential learning and collective engagement. Peer Mentors will also help plan and implement events and activities that promote student engagement and success. Working under the Director, Academic Experiences, Peer Mentors support the integration of “High-Impact Practices” (HIPs) across the RRCC curriculum and co-curriculum. HIPs are data-backed strategies identified by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) that increase graduation rates and deep learning, particularly among underrepresented and first‑generation students. Example HIPs include creation of Learning Communities, sharing Intellectual Experiences, exploring Global Diversity, pursuing Undergraduate Research, contributing to Collaborative Projects, and engaging in Community Service. This position reports to Martin Doppelt, Director, Academic Experiences, but Peer Mentors may be assigned to work collaboratively under the direction of other RRCC staff. These will typically include members of either Academic Affairs and Workforce Innovation or Student Affairs, but may extend to other units as necessary. Hours for this role are between Monday and Friday, 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM, at the Lakewood Campus location. Weekly schedules will be set in consultation with the supervisor and teammates, based on programmatic needs. This role requires attendance at weekly team meetings, as well as regular participation in events, activities, or other programs designed to enhance the RRCC community. This role may require hours outside of a normal work schedule. This is a student employee position. This position may work up to 20 hours each week while class is in session and up to 28 hours each week during academic breaks or breaks between terms while an RRCC student, depending on class schedule, need, and budget availability. Student employees are enrolled and contribute to a TIAA-CREF account when enrolled in less than six credits. Students who qualify for work study employment are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
For work study employment:
  • 1. Must be an RRCC student and have been granted a work study award for the semester the student is seeking employment and maintain eligibility.
  • 2. Must be enrolled in at least half-time (6 credit hours) and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress for all credit hours.
For student hourly employment:
  • 1. Must be an RRCC student and enrolled in at least half-time (6 credit hours).
Other Required Qualifications
  • 1. Must have a commitment to equity and quality customer service and the ability to interact and communicate effectively in oral and written form with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • 2. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • 3. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook PowerPoint) and have advanced computer skills and experience with virtual meeting platforms (Zoom/Webex etc.).
  • 4. Must be reliable, punctual and have a good work ethic.
  • 5. Must be a self-starter with time-management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • 6. Ability to work from campus (Lakewood campus location) and be eligible for student employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous involvement in student organizations, leadership programs, or campus activities
  • Experience facilitating conversations, events, or student engagement activities
  • Moderate to high familiarity with how to use the suite of Google productivity tools
  • Moderate to high familiarity with how to use the suite of Canva productivity tools

Physical & Cognitive Demands

  • The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.
  • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • This is sometimes a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
