Job summary

The University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support the Perioperative Services team in the Pediatric Operating Room. Responsibilities include preparing the surgical area, handling instruments and implants, and assisting under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to ensure patient safety.

Desirable candidates will have a surgical technology certification or equivalent vocational training and at least two years of technologist experience,

Qualifications

• Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist.
• Two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
• Experience scrubbing pediatric emergency cases including craniotomy, ortho trauma and general surgery.

Responsibilities

• Prepare surgical area for patient care and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Provide for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies and implants.
• Assist with documentation according to department/division standard under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
• Serve as primary preceptor to orient new staff and/or student technologists to scrubbing duties.
• Follow infection control precautions and participate in perioperative initiatives.
