Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking an Observation Assistant in the Emergency Room Pediatrics to provide constant observation and safety checks for high-risk patients. You will assist with de-escalation, accompany patients during procedures, and help maintain a safe environment under RN direction.

You will document observations, communicate needs during shifts, and support nursing staff with a variety of duties to ensure patient care excellence in a fast-paced ER setting.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate or equivalent.
• Must be able to complete de-escalation training.
• Current Basic Life Support or HeartSaver certification.

Responsibilities

• Provide constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by RN.
• Monitor patient safety and conduct safety checks at required intervals.
• Assist in patient bathroom visits under RN supervision.
• De-escalate distressed patients using approved techniques.
• Notify RN of changes in patient activity, mood, or requests for medication.
• Document patient behavior and safety checks in the chart and hand off to oncoming staff.
