PAYROLL SUPERVISOR

$46,000 annually + eligible for management bonus program

Department: General Accounting

FLSA Classification: Exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Payroll Supervisor assists the Payroll Manager with oversight of day-to-day payroll operations to ensure timely and accurate employee wage processing. This role supervises payroll staff, supports payroll controls and procedures, and helps ensure compliance with applicable laws and company policies.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Extensive payroll experience is a priority for this role. Candidates should bring strong technical payroll knowledge, hands-on experience reviewing and processing payroll, regulatory compliance expertise, reconciliation skills, and demonstrated supervisory capability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise daily payroll activities, including maintaining payroll databases, recording updates, and issuing payment summaries.
  • Review and correct payroll data for accuracy, including hours worked, pay rates, deductions, leave, and taxes before payroll transmittal.
  • Ensure payroll processes remain compliant with federal, state, and local requirements and implement best practices as regulations change.
  • Use and support payroll processing software and tools that automate reporting, tax calculations, deductions, and clerical tasks.
  • Maintain responsibility for assigned payroll processes and data accuracy, including upload-file preparation and balancing.
  • Conduct scheduled audits of payroll records and prepare paychecks accurately and on time.
  • Enter and audit payroll data in databases and spreadsheets and assist with payroll procedures and internal controls.
  • Review, correct, transmit, download, and verify processed payroll; maintain electronic payroll records.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll, benefits, and deductions.
  • Process garnishments, levies, bankruptcies, child-support wage assignments, and other third-party requests.
  • Create reports and reconcile monthly balance-sheet accounts involving benefits, taxes, garnishments, and tip-related general ledger accounts.
  • Complete required labor reports and remain current on payroll laws and regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws, wage-and-hour regulations, tax requirements, payroll practices, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Experience with payroll systems and timekeeping software, automated accounting systems, account balancing, and related payroll technology.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail with an analytical mindset, sound judgment, urgency, and flexibility.
  • Experience leading process-improvement initiatives and supervising payroll staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, computerized accounting, 10-key, and basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to handle confidential information discreetly and communicate effectively with employees and internal partners.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems, prioritize competing deadlines, and work independently or collaboratively in a high-volume environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or a related field preferred.
  • Five years of previous payroll, accounting, or bookkeeping experience required, including one to two years of previous supervisory experience.
  • Ability to obtain any job-required gaming or regulatory permit is required where applicable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Primarily an indoor, office-based position requiring prolonged periods of sitting and regular use of a computer, calculator, telephone, and other office equipment.
  • Requires visual acuity, hearing, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity.
  • Must be able to move general office items weighing up to approximately 15 pounds.
