Job summary

City of Austin Employees Retirement System (COAERS) seeks an Accountant to support payroll, accounts payable, retirement benefits administration, and general ledger activities in a hybrid Austin, TX environment.

The role emphasizes accurate financial reporting, internal controls, and collaboration with stakeholders. A bachelor’s in accounting/finance and related experience are required; CPA preferred. Excellent benefits accompany the position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; plus two years of relevant experience.
• CPA designation toward or CPA preferred is a plus.
• Experience with payroll processing and governmental accounting standards is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Process and reconcile biweekly staff payroll and related entries.
• Verify, process, and reconcile accounts payable transactions with vendor payments.
• Administer monthly retirement benefit payments including tax withholding and deposits.
• Perform bank reconciliations and monitor cash balances.
• Prepare and post general ledger journal entries and support month-end/year-end closing.
• Assist with regulatory reporting, tax filings, and audits as needed.
• Identify process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
