Job summary

3+ years of direct government payroll experience

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to support accurate and timely payroll processing, reporting, reconciliation, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, knowledge of payroll regulations, and experience working with payroll systems in a government environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Calculate and verify employee hours and pay, process time records, and resolve payroll discrepancies.
• Review and audit payroll transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Reconcile payroll records and investigate variances.
• Prepare and review federal and state payroll tax filings.
• Develop and maintain payroll reports, spreadsheets, and schedules.
• Respond to employee and management inquiries regarding payroll policies and procedures.
• Support payroll system configuration and ongoing process improvements.
• Assist with training employees and managers on payroll systems and processes.

Required Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of government payroll processes, principles, and procedures.
• Understanding of applicable federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
• Familiarity with accounting principles, HR practices, and employee benefits.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to analyze and present payroll and financial data.

Systems & Technical Skills

• Experience with an ERP financial system.
• PeopleSoft experience is highly preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and lookup functions (VLOOKUP or equivalent).
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
• Experience with pivot tables is an advantage.
