As an asphalt roller operator, your duties are to operate paving equipment, such as motorized rollers, to create a paved road or another surface for a construction or repair project. You work with many different pieces of machinery that are designed to apply different surface materials. Often, your duties include using other equipment to lay down gravel and stone or specialized tools that ensure the ground is compacted and level before applying asphalt or other materials. Your responsibilities also include performing routine maintenance and repair of your equipment. Operating heavy rolling and paving machinery is complicated work, so you need to have an eye for detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to interpret blueprints and other schematics.
Responsibilities
- Safely and skillfully operates an asphalt paver following all standard equipment procedures
- Responsible for consistency and uniformity of material compaction after being placed by hand or with a paver
- Maintains equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance and repair tasks such as adjusting, fluid checks, replacing minor parts and lubricating equipment
- Responsible for daily checks of water systems and scrapers on the drums
- Must maintain an acute sense of awareness to the surrounding footprint of the machine (watch for obstructions while operating the equipment, such as ground utilities, curb and gutters)
- Maintain constant visual contact with Screed operators, dump man and trucks in front of the paver
- Must perform general laborer duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Able to lift 50 pounds. Able to walk moderate distances to reach work area.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Must have good hand-eye coordination, quick reaction times.
- Required to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
- A sound understanding of pertinent safety guidelines.
- Capacity to provide and follow direction.
- Sharp decision-making skills, particularly when under pressure.
- Safe operation of hand tools.
- Ability to work extended hours, as required including night work and Saturdays.
- Travel to jobsites within 70 miles of main office in Honesdale, PA.
- Pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
