Job summary

Saint Francis Health System seeks a Patient Financial Counselor to provide timely financial counseling to patients, families and visitors, ensuring accurate data collection and a positive impression aligned with our mission.

The role requires 1–2 years of related experience, strong Word/Excel skills, and knowledge of payer programs, with the ability to negotiate payment arrangements while maintaining confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
  • 1–2 years of related experience in patient financial services.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with teamwork focus.
  • Knowledge of government and third-party payer programs.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews/counsels patients by phone, in-house or walk-in to collect data for payment.
  • Assists patients in identifying charity care or other programs (e.g., T19).
  • Verifies insurance and benefits with patient, employer or insurer.
  • Obtains authorizations and completes required forms for visits.
  • Provides price quotes, determines liability and negotiates payments.
  • Sets up payment arrangements and collects deposits, co-pays or deductibles.
  • Supports patients with billing problems with the Patient Accounting Department.
  • Acts as a resource for patient complaints or problems within the hospital.
