Job summary

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Transitional Care Unit. This full-time role operates on a night shift (7 PM–7 AM) with three 12-hour shifts and rotating weekends.

The PCT will provide direct patient care, assist with activities of daily living, monitor vitals, and perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and specimen collection under RN supervision. CNAs and other certified staff are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
• BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
• CNA/NCMA/NCPCT or equivalent preferred.
• EMR/EMS/EMT/Paramedic experience considered for eligibility.
• PCT or Nursing Assistant background within last 3 years preferred.

Job description

City/State: Norfolk, VA. Work Shift: Third (Nights).

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Transitional Care Unit. This is a Full Time, Night Shift (12-hour shift) position.

Hours: 7PM-7AM - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours/week) with rotating weekends.

The rehabilitation nursing unit is a 16-bed medical/surgical unit that specializes in rehabilitation. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to: CVA, spinal cord injury, amputations, major multiple trauma, brain injury, bilateral joint replacement, neurological disorders (i.e. multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome and Parkinson’s disease), and cardiac/pulmonary disorders, including patients following heart transplants, Left Ventricular Assist Devices and patients with pulmonary hypertension on special medications no longer requiring titration. This unit does not have telemetry monitoring or ventilators.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Requirements

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) and one of the following is required:


• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or


• Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or


• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or


• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or


• Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or


• Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or


• Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program, or


• Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant.

Certifications/Licensure

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
