Job summary

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Medicine Unit. This full-time, day-shift role runs 7:00 am to 7:00 pm with three 12-hour shifts and rotating weekends.

The PCT will support nursing staff with patient care, vital signs, ADLs, phlebotomy, EKGs, and specimen collection. Qualifications include a high school diploma/equivalent and multiple credential options (CNA, NCMA, NCPCT, Navy Hospital Corps School, EMR/EMS/EMT/AEMT/Paramedic).

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• CNA/NCMA/NCPCT/NCPCT/US Navy Hospital Corps School or EMR/EMS/EMT/AEMT/Paramedic credentials accepted.
• AHA BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
• One year health care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and assist with activities of daily living.
• Monitor vitals, mobility and ambulation.
• Perform phlebotomy, point-of-care testing and EKGs.
• Assist with IV removal, specimen collection and Foley catheter insertion/removal.
• Document patient status and changes accurately for RN supervision.

Overview

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for Medicine Unit. This is a Full Time, Day Shift (12-hour shift) position.

Hours: 7:00am to 7:00pm - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours per week), with rotating weekends.

Department Overview

This 24-bed Medicine Unit is seeking a compassionate Patient Care Technician to support our nursing team! Our diverse patient population includes but is not limited to CHF, sickle cell, renal failure, vascular, sepsis, COPD, pneumonia, wound care, and an assortment of varying disease processes. Join our team to help deliver excellent patient care!

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) and one of the following is required:

• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program
• Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)
• Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
• Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic
• Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program
• Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant

Certifications/Licensure: AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience: One year of health care experience (Preferred).

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay range for full-time employment is $18.93 - $27.41 hourly.

Additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
