PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and training, and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, assisting in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including those related to patient satisfaction, actively participating in process improvement activities to help achieve the organization’s Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Related Education:
  • Assist healthcare team members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures such as Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access.
Treatment:
  • Welcome patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by law.
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight; evaluate vascular access pre-treatment.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
  • Monitor and respond to intradialytic problems as prescribed.
  • Monitor patient response, document treatment parameters, and evaluate patient prior to discharge.
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, record accurate treatment data, and document all relevant information.
Staff and Infection Control:
  • Assist in training direct care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Follow infection control policies, maintain cleanliness, and support education on infection practices.
Record Keeping and Transitional Care:
  • Participate in CQI activities, accurately document treatment data, and prepare patient charts and lab specimens.
  • Follow all procedures for infection control and transition patients through initial dialysis phases, coordinating care and education.
Physical Demands and Conditions:

The role involves physical activity, including lifting and moving patients, standing for prolonged periods, and exposure to healthcare environment conditions. Reasonable accommodations will be considered.

Education and Licenses:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet state and/or national certification requirements within the designated timeline.
  • All relevant state licensure, education, and training required.
Experience and Skills:
  • Preferred experience in patient care settings.
  • Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required for continued employment.
