Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities such as QEP and CQI. Complies with organizational policies, procedures, and regulations set by relevant authorities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Related

Education:

  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access, including OLC, AMP, UKM.

Treatment:

  • Greet patients, assess wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment.
  • Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, ensuring safety and accuracy in documentation.
  • Respond to intradialytic issues, evaluate patient response, and perform necessary interventions.
  • Maintain equipment safety checks, manage alarms, and ensure proper machine programming and treatment documentation.
  • Report significant changes or concerns to the RN or supervisor, and assist with specimen collection and infection control practices.

Staff Related

  • Assist in training direct care staff under RN supervision.

Education/Communication

  • Adhere to organizational policies, maintain a safe environment, and ensure cleanliness and readiness of treatment areas.
  • Document participation in CQI activities and treatment data accurately and timely.

Infection Control

  • Support infection control policies, assist in audits, and educate patients and families as permitted by law.

Transitional Care Unit

  • Support new patients during their first 4 weeks, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with modality transition and supply management.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, and assisting with ambulation, with accommodations as needed. Work environment includes healthcare setting with exposure to infectious materials.

Education and Licenses

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required; certification and licensure as per CMS and state requirements.

Experience and Skills

  • Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR required. Recent dialysis technician or CCHT experience required for this role.
