Job description

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Related

• Assist in patient education regarding adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
• Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, and monitor patient response.
• Record vital signs, weight, and treatment parameters accurately and timely.
• Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatments following prescribed orders.
• Document all treatment data, interventions, and patient responses.
• Report significant changes to the nurse or supervisor.
• Perform safety checks, maintain infection control, and support patient self-care under supervision.

Staff Related

• Assist in training direct care staff as supervised by a nurse.

Record Keeping

• Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data, and manage laboratory specimens.

Infection Control

• Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and reinforce education.

Transitional Care Unit

• Support patients through initial dialysis period, coordinate care, and assist with home dialysis education and transition.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

• Perform physical tasks including lifting up to 40 lbs, standing for prolonged periods, and assisting with patient mobility.

Education and Licenses:

• High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
• Must meet CMS certification requirements and hold appropriate state licensure if applicable.

Experience and Skills:

• Experience in patient care preferred; completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
