Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with regulations set forth by the organization, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting the organization's commitment to quality improvement and patient satisfaction.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Related Education:
  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures such as OLC, AMP, UKM, and disease process/access.
Treatment:
  • Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, obtain vital signs, initiate and monitor dialysis, evaluate responses, and document all procedures accurately.
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, monitor patient status, and report changes to the nurse or supervisor.
  • Prepare lab specimens, ensure infection control practices, and assist with supplies and equipment management.
Staff and Education/Communication:
  • Assist in training staff, follow organizational policies, maintain a safe environment, and ensure proper cleaning and disinfection.
Record Keeping:
  • Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately, prepare patient charts, and ensure lab specimen collection and storage.
Infection Control:
  • Support infection control policies, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.
Transitional Care Unit:
  • Manage care for new patients, reinforce education, coordinate with staff, and assist with modality transition and supply management.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Includes handling heavy lifting, prolonged standing, travel between facilities, and exposure to infectious materials. Reasonable accommodations will be considered.

Education and Licenses:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D., valid state license, and certification as required by CMS. Must meet all licensure and training requirements.
Experience and Skills:
  • Preferred experience in patient care; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
