Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Patient Care Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Provide patient care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned service.
- Ensure effective and safe patient outcomes through appropriate practice, judgment, and critical actions.
- Maintain ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues, and other healthcare team members regarding patient's status and care provided.
- Take initiative to do more than expected or required, acting proactively, improving performance, and creating new opportunities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of patient’s care plan from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care.
- Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement activities.
- Specific job functions may include but are not limited to:
- Welcoming patients and verifying proper identification.
- Preparing patients for assessments, admissions, examinations, and procedures.
- Recognizing opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction.
- Providing age-appropriate care based on knowledge and skills.
- Obtaining and documenting clinical data such as vital signs and notifying RN of abnormal results.
- Drawing blood via venipuncture, ensuring proper labeling and processing.
- Performing EKGs as directed.
- Maintaining and checking emergency and medical equipment.
- Applying bandages, slings, and other supportive devices.
- Assisting in patient transport and preparation for meals or feeding.
- Restocking supplies and preparing rooms for new admissions.
- Providing hygiene and comfort care, assisting with dressing, and managing patient belongings.
- Performing glucose testing, collecting specimens, and providing post-mortem care.
- Monitoring patient weights, intake, and output.
- Ensuring a safe environment by responding promptly to call lights and communicating changes to RN.
- Modifying care to meet the needs of diverse patient populations, including cultural, language, and sensory considerations.
- Performing other duties and projects as assigned.
- Adhering to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Completion of a recognized Patient Care Technician, Nursing Assistant, or related program, or equivalent medical experience such as EMT, CMA, or Home Health Aide. Candidates without completed programs but with relevant experience may be considered for the PCT Apprentice Program.
- Ability to learn quickly, adapt, and demonstrate accountability and teamwork.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience or certification in phlebotomy, EKG, vital signs, and blood sugar testing.
- At least one year of PCT or CNA experience in a hospital setting or successful completion of a PCT program including clinical components.
Certifications and Licenses:
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 60 days of hire.
- Preferred: Medical Office Assistant Certification.
