Purpose and Scope
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to enhance patient satisfaction and care outcomes.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Related Education
- Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease process.
Treatment
- Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, and monitor vital signs and patient response during dialysis.
- Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatment as prescribed, ensuring safety and proper documentation.
- Handle laboratory specimens and maintain infection control standards.
Staff Related
- Assist in training staff on relevant programs under supervision of a nurse.
Education and Communication
- Follow organizational policies, maintain a clean environment, and prepare equipment for treatment.
Record Keeping
- Accurately document treatment data, participate in CQI activities, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.
Infection Control
- Support infection control practices and participate in audits and education.
Transitional Care Unit
- Follow new patients through initial dialysis phases, coordinate care, and support patient understanding of treatment options.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Perform physical tasks including lifting up to 40 lbs, standing for prolonged periods, and working in a healthcare environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases.
Education and Licenses
- High School diploma or G.E.D., with required certifications and licensure as per state and CMS standards.
Experience and Skills
- Preferred previous patient care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
