Job description

UPMC Mercy Emergency Department - Patient Care Technician

UPMC Mercy is seeking a full-time Patient Care Technician to support our Emergency Department. This position involves working 3 rotating 12-hour shifts weekly, with start times at 7am and 7pm. Overnight shifts offer an additional $1.60 per hour. Candidates should have at least 1 year of hospital patient care experience, EMT certification, or completed clinical rotations in nursing school. About the Department

The Emergency Department at UPMC Mercy is a state-of-the-art 36-bed Level I trauma and burn center, also serving as a primary cardiac and comprehensive stroke center. Annually, we provide emergency care to over 68,000 patients, handling a variety of cases from minor to complex medical-surgical needs, obstetrical emergencies, psychiatric cases, and substance abuse issues. The department's environment is fast-paced and requires critical thinking and adaptability.

Position Details

The title and starting pay may vary based on experience. Salary range and responsibilities listed pertain to the Patient Care Technician-Senior role, which requires at least 2 years of patient care experience.

Responsibilities
  • Provide routine patient care following established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning patients.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, including blood glucose, and record weights, vital signs, and intake/output.
  • Apply telemetry monitors, prevent HAC & PSI with TEDS/SCDs, and collect urine samples via clean catch or mini-catheter methods.
  • Apply simple dressings, perform 12-lead EKGs, conduct bladder scans, and collect specimens. All competencies must be achieved.
