Job description

General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician to join our team at Union Memorial Hospital. The ideal candidate will have basic math knowledge, good verbal and written communication skills, and basic computer skills.

As a Patient Care Technician, you will work as part of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse for assigned patients and their families/significant others. Responsibilities include assisting medical and nursing staff with procedures and tests, supporting activities of daily living (ADLs), and performing specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, IV insertion, EKGs, and documentation.

Primary Duties:
  1. Assist patients with ADLs and personal hygiene, including bathing, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, and range of motion activities.
  2. Support patient mobilization, use of assistive devices, and transfer/transport of patients.
  3. Collect specimens, perform venipuncture/phlebotomy, obtain EKGs, apply telemetry monitoring, and manage IVs and dressings. Document patient intake/output and vital signs accurately.
  4. Perform routine sterile and non-sterile treatments, including tube feedings, ostomy care, Foley catheter care/removal, wound care, turning/positioning, postmortem care, and equipment maintenance.
  5. Maintain patient comfort, privacy, confidentiality, and dignity. Conduct patient observations, assist with examinations, and respond to patient, family, and visitor inquiries professionally. Report changes in patient condition to the nurse and assist in CPR when needed.
  6. Ensure cleanliness and safety of patient environments, assist with environmental services, and maintain supply rooms. Transport and escort patients as needed, and complete errands such as specimen delivery.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program.
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the relevant authority.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • 12 months of experience as a CNA preferred.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification preferred.
  • Experience as a care technician or in healthcare settings; student nurse in senior year preferred.

This position offers a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
