General Summary

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and in accordance with the Nursing Care Plan, performs delegated competency-validated patient care functions and applies technical skills of a limited uncomplicated nature. Fulfillment of the job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas.

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED). State Nursing Assistant Certification required, along with completion of one of the following training programs: hospital-based program, community college, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Corpsmen, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of recent, direct patient care experience in an acute care facility or equivalent.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to utilize universal safety precautions and to act appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate understanding of growth and development principles over the lifespan and assess data reflective of patient requirements relative to population-specific and age-specific needs. Provides care as described in unit/area/department policies and procedures.
  • Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members to establish working relationships that foster optimal patient care.
  • Ensures patient safety in job functions and participates in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Acts to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management.
  • Identifies potential risks in processes, procedures, devices, and communicates these to those in charge.
