Job summary

NYC Health + Hospitals seeks a healthcare assistant to provide clerical support and patient care under supervision. Duties include taking vital signs, collecting specimens, basic lab screening, and assisting clinicians during exams.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Successful completion of phlebotomy and electrocardiography training.
• Valid and current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• New York State Nurse’s Aide certification may be required for long-term care assignments.

Responsibilities

• Check vital signs, weigh and measure patients; record findings.
• Instruct patients on specimen collection and perform basic screening.
• Prepare collected specimens for transport with proper labeling and forms.
• Perform vision and hearing tests and simple urinalysis.
• Administer emergency first aid and basic life support.
• Perform dressing changes, wound cleansing, and related first aid.
• Prepare patient for examination and assist clinician with supplies.
• Clean and disinfect examination room and instruments.
• Inform patients about proper test preparation.
• Interview patients to obtain health history and notes.
• Maintain and process patient charts and forms.
• Report observations to clinical staff.
• Answer routine inquiries and make referrals as needed.
• Inform patients and families about health care services.
• Maintain unit inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Work as part of the care team and orient new staff.
• Escort patients to other departments and coordinate with clinics.
• Coordinate scheduling and EMR data entry for appointments.
• Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture or fingerstick.
• Operate ECG equipment to record heart activity.

Education
