Patient Access Supervisor – CMC Emergency Center

Location: Gaffney, South Carolina, United States

This is a full‑time position (8am–4:30pm) with on‑call duties every other weekend for the Emergency Center.

Job Description

This position supports the Manager/Director in developing, implementing, and adhering to all activities, policies, and procedures for the business of applicable departments. The Supervisor directly manages patient account, coding, and access staff, ensuring daily functions of charge capture, coding, export, review, edits, and eligibility are accurate to maintain revenue integrity and compliance. The Supervisor sets the standard for work ethics and expects excellence from staff, manages performance, measures departmental goals, and develops reporting methods to evaluate and improve staff productivity. This role demonstrates strong leadership, resolves employee complaints, and collaborates with other managers and staff to promote efficient workflow.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • High School diploma or equivalent experience
  • Five or more years of experience in healthcare access, customer service, office, or financial setting, or two or more years as Patient Access Specialist, or two or more years in a leadership position
  • Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) within three years of job classification change (preferred)
  • Supervise, organize, and monitor the daily operation of the PAS department
  • Assist department manager with financial performance, expenses, and department budget
  • Work closely with clinical area management to ensure a positive patient experience
  • Identify registration occurrence trends, educate staff on prevention of avoidable occurrences
  • Conduct compliance audits for state and federal regulatory bodies (HICO, Integrity, RTE, etc.) and document findings, following up with associates
  • Oversee patient wait times and customer concerns; monitor medical order issue trends
  • Monitor continuing education for associates to ensure efficient and effective operation
  • Assist manager with hiring, training, and supervising new PAS associates
  • Perform associate and patient rounding
  • Create and maintain work schedule; approve or deny PTO requests; flex staffing per volume
  • On call for nights, holidays, and weekends as determined by department manager
  • Account for associates calling in; determine readjustment of staffing needs
  • Assist manager with annual associate performance appraisals
  • Timekeeper responsibilities in Kronos
  • Work well under stress, meet deadlines in a busy department
  • Maintain good physical condition, vision, coordination, and dexterity; professional appearance
  • Adapt to an ever‑changing work environment and encourage others to accept changes positively
  • Withstand many hours of sitting, standing, and walking, function effectively under stress

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Manager of Patient Access Services

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency (or higher) – referred to in prior section
  • Minimum three years experience as Patient Access Specialist or in a leadership position (preferred)
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in business or healthcare related field (preferred)
