Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health in New Jersey seeks a Patient Access Specialist to ensure smooth registration operations, plan staff schedules, and provide 24/7 on-call support with weekend coverage. You will monitor staff productivity and maintain payroll/attendance records within the Emergency Dept Access Service.

You should have 2–3 years in hospital registration and scheduling, with experience in pre-certifications and authorizations. Bilingual skills are a plus and day shifts are common.

Qualifications

• 2-3 years experience in a hospital patient registration setting.
• 2-3 years experience in a doctor's office scheduling, obtaining pre-certifications, authorizations and referrals.
• 2-3 years in a patient services environment (billing/collections; knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid/HMO).
• 2-3 years experience completing medical assistance applications (family care, PE/PAIC or charity care).
• Preferred: bilingual.

Responsibilities

• Provides professional, efficient, congenial customer service to patients, clients, guests and co-workers.
• Receives face sheets, IDs, insurance cards; audits registrations of uninsured patients; reviews eligibility for financial assistance.
• Verifies benefits, secures pre-certifications/pre-authorizations/referrals as needed.
• Notifies patients of prerequisites required by insurance plans.
• Estimates balances and explains rates, charges, discounts, and hospital policies.
• Collects patient payments per cashier guidelines; maintains records for payroll and attendance.

The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

The Patient Access Specialist will ensure that registration operations and functions are running smoothly and efficiently. This candidate will be responsible for the planning and scheduling of staff while providing 24/7 on call support along with alternate weekend coverage with Co-ED Specialists. This candidate will monitor and evaluate staff productivity and performance and supplement the front line staff as needed or directed. Maintain records for payroll and attendance purposes. Maintain professional and employee competency through formal and/or informal education programs. As a Patient Access Specialist, a typical daymight include:

• Provides and promotes professional, efficient and congenial customer service thru all communication and interaction with patients, clients, guests and co-workers
• Receives a copy of face sheet, patient I.D., insurance cards, copies of electronic and address responses to audit the registrations of the uninsured patients and reviews eligibility for financial assistance.
• Refers those eligible for Medicaid as appropriate
• Verifies benefits, obtains pre-certification / pre-authorization or referrals as needed
• Notifies patients of any pre-requisites such as notification to insurance provider required by their insurance

• Estimates an approximate balance of services explains rates, charges, services, discounts contracts and hospital policy regarding payment of bills to patients/ families
• Ensures we obtain signatures including presumptive eligibility forms
• Checks the ADT system for previous accounts informing patients of account balances
• Collects patient payments to include deposits, co pays or deductibles. Follows cashiers guidelines for receipts, lock box and reconciliation of monies received

• 2-3 years experience in a hospital patient registration setting.
• 2-3 years experience in a doctor's office, handling patients scheduling, obtaining pre-certifications, authorizations and referrals.
• 2-3 years in a patient services environment (billing/collections-must have a working knowledge of more than one provider such as Medicare, Medicaid, HMO s and others.
• 2-3 years experience in completing medical assistance application (family care, PE s, PAIC s or charity care).
• Well developed interpersonal skills with the ability to understand and communicate with persons of varying acuities.
• Must be able to work with the public and maintain poise under difficult situations.
• Good typing and computer skills required.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to organize and manage time effectively to optimize productivity.
• Preferred: Bilingual

Scheduling Requirements:

• Day Shift:7:00am-8:00pm 3 days per week
• Example:
  • Week A: Monday, Tuesday, Saturday
  • Week B: Sunday, Thursday, Friday
• Holiday coverage required
