Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Patient Access Representative to register patients, verify insurance, and obtain required documentation in a fast-paced outpatient setting at the Academic Access Center. You will collect demographics, authorize selections for financial clearance, and handle payments with accuracy while delivering excellent customer service.

The role emphasizes collaboration with nursing and other departments, attention to detail, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Medical insurance verification and authorization experience preferred
• Patient Access experience preferred
• Knowledge in all aspects of registration, non-federal and federal billing regulations, and state programs such as Charity Care preferred
• Medical terminology and computer skills

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and facilitate patient registration and admissions, collecting demographic and insurance information.
• Ensure accurate documentation and timely financial clearance of outpatient hospital accounts.
• Provide compassionate, patient-centered service and effective communication with patients and families.
• Escalate issues to leadership when necessary and work with nursing and ancillary departments to foster teamwork.
• Participate in training and development of registration staff and tools.

The Patient Access Representative plays a vital role in creating a positive first impression on our patients by delivering compassionate, patient-centered service. This position is responsible for accurately registering patients, verifying insurance, obtaining required documentation, collecting applicable payments and ensuring a seamless registration experience. The representative serves as the first point of contact for patients and families, providing exceptional customer service during stressful and urgent situations.

As a Patient Access Representative, a typical day might include:

• Responsible for coordinating and facilitating registration and admissions by obtaining pertinent demographic information, collecting accurate insurance information authorizations to financially clear outpatient hospital accounts
• The ideal candidate must be detail oriented and promote patient satisfaction
• Service-orientated background, good written and verbal communication skills and accurate typing ability
• Demonstrates initiative and motivation in a role; proactively identifies and resolves problems in an appropriate manner and escalates issues to leadership when necessary
• Reflects commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintains a positive attitude
• Works closely and professionally with nursing and ancillary departments to foster a team environment.
• Participate in training through the development of training tools, presentations at department in-service or staff meetings, or through the training of registration staff outside the patient access department
