Patient Access Rep - Patient Access - FT

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the department supervisor, the Patient Access Representative interviews incoming patients or family members to obtain registration and reimbursement information. They perform reception and clerical duties to ensure the efficient operation and record keeping of the department. Responsibilities also include directing patient transport, compiling patient census data, and performing cashier duties. Maintaining patient confidentiality and a professional appearance are essential to foster patient and public confidence.

Qualifications

Required: Medical or clerical experience; 50 wpm keyboard skills; excellent spelling, math, problem-solving skills; filing and telephone skills; data entry; ability to work independently and with others; effective communication with patients and professionals; organization and attention to detail.

Preferred: Knowledge of medical terminology and limited ICD-9 coding.

Physical and Mental Demands

Medium physical demand level; ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods; lift up to 40 pounds; push a wheelchair up to 250 pounds; assist patients; vision correction required; good hearing and legible handwriting.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform patient and visitor reception, directing them appropriately.
  • Obtain and verify insurance and billing information, processing various insurance types accurately.
  • Audit charts daily for accuracy, complete follow-ups, and forward pending items.
  • Prepare identification bracelets and paperwork promptly.
  • Maintain accuracy above 95%.
  • Lookup non-scheduled patient exams in the database.
  • Report office equipment issues.
  • Collaborate with clinical departments and physician offices.
  • Attend meetings, support division initiatives, and communicate improvements.
  • Train and orient new clerical staff.
  • Communicate effectively in person and via phone, interacting with diverse personalities.
  • Handle stress, make decisions, and support hospital policies.
  • Maintain competency and demonstrate alignment with the organization’s mission and values.
  • Be aware of age-specific, cultural, spiritual, and physical needs of patients.
