Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health seeks a Patient Access Representative II for the Emergency Department at RWJUH Hamilton Hospital, Hamilton, NJ. You will register ED patients accurately, verify insurance, collect payments, and serve as the first point of contact for patients in stressful situations.

The role requires a high school diploma and at least 1 year of registration or healthcare clerical experience; an Associate degree and Epic EMR familiarity are preferred. Day, part-time shifts are available.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance verification is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Epic or comparable EMR system is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete timely and accurate ED patient registration including demographics, insurance and guarantor information.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits at time of service.
  • Obtain signatures for consent, HIPAA and financial documents.
  • Collect co-pays, deductibles and outstanding balances when appropriate.
  • Greet patients, families and visitors with professionalism and compassion.
  • Explain registration processes and hospital policies clearly to patients.
  • Respond to patient inquiries and escalate concerns when needed.
  • Ensure EMTALA and HIPAA compliance and hospital policies.
  • Identify and resolve registration errors to prevent billing delays; coordinate with ED staff for smooth patient flow.

Job Overview

The Emergency Department Patient Access Representative is responsible for accurately registering patients who present to the Emergency Department. This role ensures timely, courteous, and efficient service while maintaining compliance with hospital, regulatory, and payer requirements. The representative serves as the first point of contact for patients and families, providing exceptional customer service during stressful and urgent situations,

Essential Functions

  • Identified and resolves registration errors to prevent delays in billing and patient careWorks closely with clinical staff to ensure smooth patient flow in the ED
  • Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff regarding patient status
  • Escalates registration or financial clearance issues to leadership as needed
