Role Purpose

The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and must exemplify the highest standards of customer service, compassion, and professionalism, aligning with BJC’s mission, vision, values, and service standards. This role involves facilitating patient entry into BJC facilities, requiring emotional intelligence, professionalism, and the ability to connect personally. Accurate collection of demographics, insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collections are critical to optimizing reimbursements and preventing denials. Precise patient identification from the master person index (MPI) is essential for patient safety. The team member must have a friendly demeanor, keen attention to detail, and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and federal, state, and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities
  1. Utilize critical thinking to resolve various situations, anticipate patient needs, and respond effectively. Communicate professionally and positively with patients, families, and colleagues in person, online, or by phone. This ensures a positive patient experience, maximizes reimbursements, minimizes denials, and maintains the integrity of clinical, financial, and billing records by accurately selecting the correct MPI.
  2. Handle hospital registration and scheduling across multiple BJC systems. Ensure proper patient identification, verify insurance, scan and retrieve documents, and validate that orders are complete, signed, and accurate. Provide patients with preparation instructions, financial education, and collect payments.
  3. Understand and enforce hospital compliance with regulations such as Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA, Patient Bill of Rights, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO standards. Ensure patients complete HIPAA acknowledgments.
  4. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.
Minimum Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: No Experience required

Preferred Requirements

Education: Associate's Degree

Experience: Less than 2 years
