Job summary

Huntsville Memorial Hospital seeks a Registrar to efficiently schedule, verify insurance, complete admissions, and collect payments at the point of service. You will ensure accurate demographic and financial data, badge patients, and hand off records to clinical teams.

The role emphasizes patient contact, EMTALA-compliant registration in the ER, portal assistance, COB coordination, and maintaining PHI confidentiality. Strong computer skills and clear communication are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Excellent computer skills, oral and written communication, and customer service required.
• Prior hospital or physician practice experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Completes registration and scheduling according to protocol, ensuring accuracy of demographics and clinical records.
• Meets customer service, registration accuracy, productivity and upfront collection goals; reviews registrations for quality assurance.
• Researches appointment logs for insurance documentation, eligibility, verification, and referrals/authorizations; notifies patients of amounts due.
• Promotes safety through proper identification and reporting; arm bands every patient prior to end of registration.
• Follows check-in process with timestamped arrival/departure; compliant with EMTALA in ER registrations.
• Assists patients with Patient Portal registration and Meaningful Use compliance.
• Documents thoroughly; flags accounts for past due balances and other critical notifications.
• Uses payer websites to verify eligibility; performs pre-certification/authorization at time of service; communicates procedures to payer.
• Discusses COB with patient; records order of payers; completes MSPQ; assigns insurance plans accordingly.
• Explains forms clearly and obtains signatures in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
• Completes Medical Necessity screening and notifies patient via ABN for non-covered services.
• Calculates patient responsibility and collects at check-in; other collections at discharge.
• Maintains cash drawer and participates in daily reconciliation.
• Abides by Legal Compliance Code of Conduct and maintains a safe work environment.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and PHI handling.
• Performs other related duties as required.
