Job summary

The Pathologists' Assistant at HCA Healthcare is a staff position supporting pathologists in surgical pathology services. Under general supervision, the assistant works independently on professional duties involving examination and preparation of surgical pathology specimens.

Responsibilities include organizing workflow in gross and frozen section areas, assisting pathologists in determining priorities, and dictating gross findings for microscopic review when needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Masters in Pathologists’ Assistant
• 3–5 years’ experience in a pathology or histology laboratory setting
• Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred
• 3–5 years’ grossing experience in a hospital setting accepted in lieu of ASCP certification or master’s degree

Responsibilities

• Organize and improve workflow in frozen section and gross examination areas.
• Collaborate with on-site Pathologists to determine grossing priorities.
• Dictate gross findings and refer tissue sections for microscopic review when needed.
• Maintain records of dissections and dictation for report compilation.
• Photograph specimens for teaching and documentation.
