Job summary

Serco is seeking a Patent Classifier as part of its Intellectual Property Services program to support USPTO classifications and related patent search work. The role emphasizes accurate, efficient classification using technical research and automated tools, with opportunities to grow in patent processes and report writing.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience), 0–2 years in a relevant field, critical thinking, and the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or 2 years additional work experience in lieu of degree.
• 0-2 years experience in related field or 2 years of additional work experience in lieu of degree.
• Ability to think critically; understanding of technical concepts; databases, AI, information security preferred.
• Willingness to travel up to 25%.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

• Determine appropriate classifications in line with US and international patent systems using research and automated tools.
• Prepare written reports for patent attorneys and IP professionals.
• Use MS Word and Excel; work on a computer workstation 8 hours per day.
• Learn patent classification, search, and examination processes.
• Apply knowledge to assign USPC and CPC codes to complex technical subjects.
• Operate in a production-based environment with emphasis on accuracy and speed.
• Work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
• Participate in ongoing training to expand knowledge in technical fields.
