Job description

Job Overview:

A law firm based in Washington, DC, is seeking a technically skilled Patent Agent with significant experience in semiconductor technologies. This role involves engaging in sophisticated patent preparation and prosecution work, primarily within the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The position supports attorneys in providing high-caliber intellectual property services for clients in semiconductor-related industries. Candidates must bring a strong technical background, independent judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with inventors and technical personnel.

Duties:

Draft patent applications with a focus on the technical aspects of semiconductor innovations

Prepare responses to office actions from U.S. and international patent offices

Consult with inventors and technical teams to assess inventions and prepare reports for legal review

Serve as a communication link between inventors and patent offices throughout the patent lifecycle

Analyze and interpret technical disclosures and advise legal teams on relevant technologies

Summarize and evaluate scientific documentation in support of patent filings

Identify and propose solutions to complex intellectual property challenges

Guide and support legal support personnel on patent-specific matters

Monitor advancements in semiconductor and related technologies and make process recommendations

Participate in client meetings and interact with various stakeholders in a professional manner

Complete additional responsibilities as needed in support of the IP team

Requirements:

Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in patent drafting and prosecution in the semiconductor industry

Demonstrated expertise with U.S. and international patent processes

Strong analytical skills for assessing inventions and technical documents

Ability to manage confidential information and exercise sound professional judgment

Proficiency in communicating complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and adhere to deadlines

Capability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic legal environment

Flexibility to work extended hours as required to meet project timelines

Availability for occasional travel to client sites and other firm locations

Must be physically present in the office at least three days a week, with remote flexibility up to two days

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields (or closely related disciplines):

Electrical Engineering

Physics

Chemical Engineering

Certifications:

Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is preferred

Skills:

Technical writing and documentation for patent applications

Research and investigative proficiency in advanced technologies

Time management and multitasking in a legal services environment

Familiarity with productivity and IP docketing software

Interpersonal skills for interfacing with inventors, clients, and legal professionals

Knowledge of ethical and confidentiality responsibilities in a legal context
