Job Description

The Patent Agent interviews inventors, conducts patent harvesting sessions, and prepares and prosecutes patent applications before the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). This includes conducting interviews with patent examiners and drafting claim amendments. The Patent Agent provides guidance on patent strategy, action planning, and communication with clients, business units, and other legal areas.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage patent prosecution docket, including preparation and prosecution of high-quality patent applications.
• Execute all aspects of patent prosecution, including drafting and filing office action responses, preparing claim amendments, conducting examiner interviews, and obtaining patent allowances.
• Evaluate patentability of innovations, conduct patent harvesting sessions, and interview inventors to support patent strategy.
• Develop and advise on strategies for protecting innovations through patents.
• Collaborate with and advise business partners, clients, and legal team members.

Functional Skills

• Experience in patent drafting and prosecution, preferably in electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, physics, or related fields, including machine learning, AI, software, telematics, sensors, and insurance.
• Strong technical background with familiarity in both hardware and software.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Analytical thinker with research skills.
• Leadership qualities, sound judgment, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and in teams.
• Experience with USPTO patent application processes.

Compensation

Salary ranges from $104,000 to $187,625 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
