Job summary

Georgia Department of Public Health (GA) invites applications for a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor in Lowndes County, GA. This part-time, non-benefit eligible position supports WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by phone, home visits, and in clinics, providing basic breastfeeding information and encouragement.

The role requires personal breastfeeding experience and current or former WIC participation. Training is provided and bilingual ability is helpful but not required.

Qualifications

• Must have personal experience in breastfeeding and breast fed at least 6 months.
• Current or former WIC participant.
• Bilingual is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

• Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and hospital visits.
• Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including benefits of breastfeeding and overcoming barriers.
• Keeps accurate records of all contacts with WIC clients.
• Refer mothers to nutritionist, lactation consultant, physician, and public health programs as needed.
• Attends prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups.
