Job summary

The North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC is seeking a part-time Rental Event Captain to lead event staff and coordinate vendors for weddings and private rentals. You will drive flawless execution from setup to breakdown at our premier venue.

As MOD on duty, you will oversee operations, safety, and guest experience, working about 15 hours weekly and collaborating with the Rentals Team while upholding museum standards and policies.

Qualifications

• College degree or 2+ years’ experience in Hospitality or Event Management or a related field
• Valid US driver’s license
• Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
• Exceptional attention to detail and organization
• Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations
• Works well under pressure with a positive attitude and creative problem-solving skills
• Ability to respond to and manage emergencies with provided training
• Strong computer and Microsoft Office skills
• Available to work weekends, evenings, and late nights
• Physically able to be on one’s feet for up to 8+ hours a day, travel distances up to 1 mile on variable terrain, and lift 35 lbs. regularly

Responsibilities

• Act as Manager on Duty (MOD) during wedding and private rental events, including leading Rental Associates, coordinating vendors to fulfill client expectations, and anticipating operational needs
• Oversee and execute all wedding and event set-up and breakdown operations, including tables, chairs, ceremony layouts, reception spaces, signage, and storage of rental equipment
• Ensure all event spaces are set according to approved floorplans and timelines while maintaining Museum presentation standards
• Coordinate with caterers, DJs, florists, photographers, planners, and other vendors during load-in, event execution, and load-out
• Maintain safety, security, and cleanliness of Museum facilities and exhibits by enforcing policies, ensuring adequate cleanup, restoring the Museum to operational condition, and properly securing campus after events
• Maintain a warm, friendly, and safe Museum environment by monitoring exhibitions and event spaces and ensuring compliance with NC ABC laws and applicable policies
• Support Rentals Team during peak seasons and periods of absence by serving as MOD for select events
• Maintain organization of rental equipment, décor, signage, furniture, and storage spaces
• Train and support Rental Associates in event procedures and standards
• Participate in weekly Rentals meetings and communicate operational concerns and needs
• Transport guests, staff, and vendors in a golf cart as needed
• Attend Emergency Coordinator training and serve in that role after hours as needed
• Perform other duties as assigned
