Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools seeks a certified sign language interpreter to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students across grades K-12 within IEP frameworks. You will interpret for classrooms, meetings, assemblies, and events, ensuring accurate linguistic representation and culturally sensitive communication.

A valid driver's license and regular attendance are expected; entry-level rate will reflect creditable full-time experience. The role offers comprehensive benefits through VBCPS.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Passing score on the EIPA Written Test.
• Minimum Level 3.5 on the EIPA Performance Test or an equivalent state/national certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as equivalent to or exceeding VQAS Level III.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for deaf or hard-of-hearing students in K-12 as per IEP.
• Interpret for IEP meetings, parent conferences and Deaf staff.
• Interpret other activities during the school day (assemblies, performances, field trips).
• Prepare for assignments to ensure accurate interpretation.
• Mentor newly hired interpreters and students from Interpreter Training Programs.
• Promote cultural understanding and serve as a language role model.
