Job summary

The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is seeking a Part-Time Security Specialist (1st Shift) to help maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, collections, and facilities across multiple sites in Indiana. You will conduct patrols, monitor systems, and respond to incidents as part of a dedicated security team.

Scheduled shifts include Sunday 9 am–4 pm, Monday 11 am–7 pm, Friday 8 am–4 pm, and Saturday 8 am–4 pm, with potential holidays and occasional additional hours for

Role Overview

The Part-Time Security Specialist (1st Shift) is responsible for helping maintain a safe and secure environment for Indiana State Museum & Historic Sites (ISMHS) employees, visitors, collections, exhibits, facilities, and state property during overnight operations. The primary responsibilities include conducting routine interior and exterior security patrols; monitoring surveillance cameras, access control, intrusion detection, fire/life-safety, and other security systems; responding appropriately to alarms, emergencies, suspicious activity, and security-related incidents; securing and monitoring designated areas of the facility; assisting with after-hours contractors and authorized personnel; completing Daily Activity Reports and Incident Reports; and promptly communicating significant security, safety, maintenance, or operational concerns to the Shift Lead and Security Management. The position may also assist with monitoring alarms and security-related activity involving ISMHS historic sites and coordinating with appropriate emergency responders when required by established procedures. This Is a Part-time, 1st Shift Position Within a Security Department That Operates 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week, 365 Days a Year. This 1st Shift Position Has a Set Schedule Of The Following Days Sunday - 9 am to 4 pm Monday - 11 am to 7 pm Friday - 8 am to 4 pm Saturday - 8 am to 4 pm

Salary Statement

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $16.73 but may be commensurate with education and work experience.

A Day In The Life
  • Regular work hours will primarily consist of daytime/1st-shift assignments.
  • Weekend availability may be required as part of the established work schedule.
  • The position may be scheduled on state-recognized holidays.
  • Availability for museum programs, special events, high-attendance days, and other operational needs may occasionally be required.
  • Additional hours may be available or required because of employee call-offs, staffing shortages, special events, emergencies, or other operational circumstances.
  • Employees may occasionally be asked to remain beyond their scheduled shift until appropriate relief arrives.
  • Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential because Security operations require continuous staffing and adequate coverage.
  • Although primarily assigned to 1st shift, temporary schedule adjustments may occasionally be necessary based on departmental operational needs.

  • Reliability and Dependability – Demonstrates consistent attendance, punctuality, professionalism, and the ability to maintain dependable overnight security coverage.
  • Situational Awareness and Sound Judgment – Ability to recognize potential security or safety concerns, assess situations appropriately, follow established procedures, and make sound decisions during routine and emergency situations.
  • Communication and Documentation – Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, management, contractors, visitors, and emergency responders and prepare clear, accurate, factual, and timely security reports.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
