Job summary

Ivy Tech Community College is seeking a part-time Sciences Laboratory Technician to support natural science labs at the Plainfield and Indianapolis campuses. Responsibilities include setting up labs, cleaning prep areas, restocking materials, and ensuring safety procedures are followed.

The role supports Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, and related courses, working with full-time lab staff and reporting to the Sciences Laboratory Manager.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Biology, chemistry or physics coursework preferred.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Set-up and tear down instructional labs for courses in the Indianapolis area.
• Keep labs and prep rooms clean and organized; check equipment.
• Restock lab items and materials as needed.
• Clean and store lab supplies, wash glassware and re‑usable items.
• Follow safety regulations and stay current on SDS information.

Salary Range: $15.00 - $18.00/hour (based on experience)

About the Role:

As a part-time laboratory technician, you will provide laboratory support for natural science courses in the School of Arts, Sciences & Education. These include Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, and Physical Science. Support includes technical set-up, cleaning, and helping full-time lab staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set-up and tear down instructional labs forscience courses offered in the Indianapolis service area.
• Keep instructional labs and prep rooms clean and organized. Check equipment for proper operation.
• Restock lab items and materials as needed.
• Properly clean up and store lab supplies.
• Wash glassware and other re‑usable supplies and put them away.
• Comply with all safety regulations and lab procedures.
• Stay current on safety data sheet information for all chemicals in use.

All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• College courses in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, and/or physics
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook
• Must be dependable, punctual, organized, and dedicated to supporting faculty and students

Preferred Qualifications:

• AS degree or higher
• One year experience with instructional and research lab support.
• One year experience with chemical and biological specimen use and disposal in a laboratory environment.

Additional Basic Expectations:

• Log hours daily and submit hours every Friday in Workday
• Arrive at the scheduled starting time or a few minutes early and stay until the scheduled ending time
• Check-in with lab manager at beginning of the day and before leaving at the end of the day.
• Text lab manager at least 1 hour prior if you will not be at work.
• Let lab manager know of any appointments affecting work schedule at least a week in advance.
• Labs should be prepped in advance according to the schedule determined each term.
• Communicate any issues or concerns and ask questions when items or tasks are unclear.
• Use time wisely to complete task list.
• Accept meeting invites and reply to emails within one business day.
• Emails should be checked at the start of the day and again around midday, but computer use should be limited outside of those times.
