Responsibilities

Job Description

• Provide emergency first aid and nursing care to ill or injured students, staff, and patrons as needed, and conduct appropriate follow-up or response.
• Assess illnesses, injuries, and other health concerns and determine the appropriate level of care, referral, or emergency response.
• Obtain, review, maintain, and update required health information and records for students participating in the Dual Enrollment Program, including medical alerts, emergency information, health plans, and relevant accommodations.
• Develop, implement, and follow individualized student health plans and emergency care procedures, as appropriate.
• Manage medication administration during program hours consistent with physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, district policy, and the Regulations Governing the Administration of Prescription Medications in Public and Private Schools (105 CMR 210.000).
• Collaborate with the Massachusetts Immunization and Epidemiology Programs, district health personnel, and local public health authorities as appropriate to support infection control and compliance with Massachusetts Department of Public Health requirements.
• Communicate and collaborate with parents/guardians, school administrators, school nurses, school physicians, teachers, counselors, sending-school personnel, health care providers, emergency responders, and community agencies regarding student health needs, as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate and confidential health records and a daily log of student visits in the applicable student health record system.
• Complete accident and incident reports and forward copies as required by law, district policy, and program procedures.
• Support established district health, safety, and emergency protocols and participate in emergency response procedures as needed.
• Supervise the use and maintenance of first aid kits, emergency equipment, and health office supplies, and ensure the health office is prepared for student needs.
• Provide consultation on school health issues, both clinical and operational, to students, families, faculty, administrators, and program personnel.
• Act as a liaison between Assabet, participating students and families, sending schools, and community agencies regarding health-related issues.
• Perform any other duties normally associated with the School Nurse role and as directed by the Director of Community Education.
• NOTE: The School Nurse shall maintain as confidential all information gained concerning staff and students. Failure to maintain confidentiality may result in dismissal.

Job Requirements

• Active/current registration as a Registered Nurse in good standing with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, or Master of Education preferred. Currently certified or eligible for Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education School Nurse licensure. If not currently licensed, the successful candidate must obtain licensure within two years; failure to obtain licensure may result in termination. Current CPR/AED certification; current First Aid certification. At least three years of relevant nursing experience preferred. Experience caring for adolescents and students with special health care needs preferred; school-based nursing experience is preferred. Knowledge of applicable school health laws, regulations, medication administration requirements, confidentiality requirements, and emergency procedures. Ability to work with people and communicate effectively with diverse populations. Ability to respond calmly and effectively to medical situations, exercise sound clinical judgment, and work independently during afternoon program hours. Strong organizational, documentation, collaboration, and decision-making skills. Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.
