Job summary

Omaha Public Schools Bryan Middle in Bellevue, NE, is seeking a Kitchen Assistant (Part Time) starting at $18/hr. The role supports meal preparation, service, and sanitation while ensuring safety and compliance with HACCP and Douglas County Food Handlers requirements.

Work 3.5 hours per day from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., August through May while students are in session. Local travel not required; starting immediately with training as needed.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Ability to apply basic arithmetic calculations using units of American money, weight, volume, and distance.
• Previous food service experience preferred.
• Skill in safe food handling.
• Skill in customer relations and service recovery.
• Must demonstrate excellent attendance and work record.
• Practical working knowledge of food safety practices and procedures.
• Sensitivity and ability to interact with students, co-workers, teachers, administrators, other staff, and parents from diverse backgrounds.
• The skills pertinent to positive human relationships and to working effectively with all staff, students, parents, administrators, and the community.
• Excellent organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects with attention to detail.
• Knowledge of OPS mission, goals, and how each employee contributes.
• Assist with cleaning and sanitizing all equipment and kitchen areas.
• Complete daily tasks promptly and willing to travel to other schools if requested.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation, service, and storage of food.
• Support service excellence initiatives through proactive service efforts.
• Follow approved cafeteria menu preparation and service protocols within the approved timeline.
• Train in all kitchen stations to cross-cover as needed.
• Promote customer service by delivering appealing food and excellent service.
• Monitor portions, pricing, and safe storage of supplies and food as part of financial management.
• Assist with completing required reports.
• Work with a diverse student population and serve as a positive role model.
• Identify reimbursable meals.
• Follow required food safety, cleaning, and sanitation procedures, HACCP where applicable.
• Practice good hygiene habits.
• Demonstrate proficiency in English and basic math for daily tasks.
• Operate food service equipment safely.
• Receive and respond to verbal and nonverbal information.
• Assist with the dish machine as needed.
• Complete Douglas County Food Handlers Certification (80%+), and Kitchen Assistant Training; maintain current certification.
