Job summary

YMCA of Greater Houston seeks a part-time Lifeguard to maintain safe swimming conditions, enforce pool rules, and support member safety across pool decks and surrounding areas. The role requires current lifeguard certifications and the ability to respond quickly to emergencies in accordance with YMCA procedures.

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and capable of passing the YMCA swim assessment during the interview process.

Qualifications

• Must hold current YMCA Lifeguard Certification, American Red Cross Lifeguard or YMCA Lifeguard within 30 days.
• Must hold ASHI CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen within 30 days.
• Minimum age 16.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Ability to read, interpret, retain and teach safety rules and manuals.

Responsibilities

• Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool(s), on the pool deck(s) and in surrounding areas.
• Enforces safety rules and swim testing procedures for the pool(s) and aquatics area(s).
• Performs pool maintenance and cleaning; vacuuming, cleaning deck, tiles, and trash pickup.
• Performs pool chemical testing and maintains accurate records.
• Performs daily equipment checks and ensures equipment availability.
• Monitors pool hazards to prevent accidents.
• Maintains all required certifications as per YMCA standards.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings; minimum 4 hours in-service per month.
• Maintains vigilant surveillance and rapid rescue capability.
• Communicates rules and policies to members and staff; reports incidents and abuse.
