Job summary

Cumberland Public Library in Cumberland, RI is seeking a Part-Time Reference Assistant to support patrons with reference questions, reader’s advisory and access to online databases. The role includes helping locate materials and arranging interlibrary loans or holds, plus assisting with programs in the Reference Department.

Qualifications include a BA/BS (or library coursework/experience) and strong customer-service skills. Evening and weekend availability is required.

Qualifications

Some knowledge of library practices, techniques and materials.
Ability to identify patrons' needs and match resources.
Strong keyboarding, spelling, shelving and filing skills.
Effective communication and ability to maintain good staff/public relations.
Willingness to learn and enforce library policies.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work independently.
Ability to direct and guide others.
Experience with computers, computer equipment, software, and Internet.

Responsibilities

Answer reference questions and provide reader’s advisory.
Help patrons locate materials, fax documents, arrange interlibrary loans or holds.
Instruct users in databases, catalog, Internet and e-mail.
Explain and enforce library rules.
Assist in planning and delivering programs in Reference Department.
Supervise and train pages and volunteers.
Conduct bibliographic searches; prepare lists.
Prepare and send press releases, flyers, notices.
Create and maintain book displays.
Serve as Passport Agent.
Related work as required.
