Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is seeking a Part-Time Library Associate to join our public service team. This role focuses on delivering excellent customer service at public service desks, assisting with circulation, programming, and collection maintenance.

Schedule includes Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays with a mix of afternoon and evening hours. A high school diploma is required, with weekend availability and a background check. Compensation ranges from $20.30 to $23.21 per hour.

Responsibilities

• Provide customer service at public service desks and by phone.

Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) serves Wyandotte County, a community in Northeastern Kansas with a population of around 170,000, with five library branches and three mobile libraries. KCKPL was formed in 1893 and came under the authority of the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District Board of Education in 1899, where it remains today. The mission of Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is to connect members of a dynamic community with information, tools, resources, and welcoming spaces to enrich lives in Wyandotte County.

Job Goal: The Library Associate supports the daily operations of the library by providing excellent customer service at public service points and assisting with circulation, programming, and collection maintenance tasks. This position is an essential part of the library’s public service team and helps ensure a positive and productive experience for all patrons.

Schedule: Sunday: 1:00pm-5:00pm, Monday 3:00pm-7:00pm, Thursday: 3:00pm-7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am-5:00pm

Essential Functions:

• Provide customer service at public service desks, assisting patrons in-person and by phone with locating materials, managing accounts, and accessing library services.
• Register new patrons and introduce them to the library’s technology, policies, and offerings.
• Shelve materials and conduct collection maintenance, including weeding and shelf reading, to support a clean and accessible library space.
• Maintain department tidiness and ensure that displays and shelves are organized.
• Provide basic reader’s advisory and informational services.
• Support basic programs and events in-house and through outreach.
• Assist with outreach events to promote library services and community engagement.
• Create print and online promotional materials to support programs.
• Design and maintain displays to promote collections and meet patron interests.
• Provide support for other library operations as assigned.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent education/experience mix required.
• Experience in a library, bookstore, or public service setting preferred.
• Must pass a background check according to library standards.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
• Must provide own transportation to outreach locations.
• Strong interpersonal skills; able to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Basic computer competency, including proficiency with internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and databases.
