Lone Star College is seeking an Intern, Interpreting to serve Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, faculty, and staff across campuses, ensuring compliance with Section 504 and ADA. Job Description

The Intern, Interpreting functions as an entry-level professionalinterpreter for students, faculty, staff and administration thatare Deaf/Hard of Hearing in order to maintain institutionalcompliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504)and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Interpreting Internsstrive to advance in sign language skill proficiency in order toprovide high quality interpreting services. Interpreting Internssupport and promote all persons’ right to communication equity inlearning and workplace environments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Provides Sign Language interpretation (voice and signing) andrelated Sign Language formats:
   1. for clients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
   2. in various Lone Star College locations and settings
   3. at the appropriate language and register level
2. Analyzes source language content, meaning, and intent toaccurately deliver information to the target audience
3. Communicates client information, client status, and anyconcerns or challenges to supervisor
4. Actively researches situations involving new, technical, orcomplex information to gain an understanding of what will/may beinterpreted
5. Commitment to accepted courses or assignments for the durationof the semester.
6. Ethically models positive and inclusive behavior

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Basic fluency in both Sign Language and English with theability to have a grasp of both the source and the targetlanguages.
• Knowledge of the structure and content of Sign Language andEnglish, including the meaning and spelling of words and anunderstanding of the rules of composition and grammar
• Ability to understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students withDisability Rights, FERPA rules of the release of studentinformation to faculty, parents, students, and other relatedfederal, state, and local regulations
• Knowledge of the Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct asadopted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission
• Basic knowledge of the Deaf culture and the Deaf community
• Ability to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and toquickly develop a rapport with a wide variety of people
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

• Uses fingers (fine finger dexterity), hands and arms tocommunicate using Sign Language for assigned periods of time
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision,distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision depth perception,and ability to adjust focus
• Sitting, standing, and walking around is often required inorder to maintain line of sight with clients as well as to provideservices in certain settings (i.e. campus tours)
• Ability to receive detailed information through oralcommunication, and to make the discrimination in sound

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

• Interpreting assignments can occur at a variety of times andlocations within the LSC service area, including some evening andweekend assignments
• Work is performed in a variety of environments, mostly inclimate-controlled office, classroom, meeting and conventionenvironments with minimal exposure to safety hazards. May includeindoor and/or outdoor laboratory environments with exposure toinclement weather, dust, dirt, etc. May include work in closequarters (e.g. , simulated or real truck-driving cab) as well asproviding remote services

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Enrollment in qualified Interpreter Training Program withcompletion of appropriate classes and hours to have reached theinternship/practicum phase of the program
• Ability to pass a basic skills screening with a member of theASR Interpreting team
• Reliable mode of transportation to travel between assignmentswithin the LSC Service Area

Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is $17.58
