Job description

Position Overview

Join our team at Portland Community College as a Part‑Time Faculty member in the Eye Technician Program at the Cascade Campus. PCC limits employment to individuals residing in Oregon or Washington and requires applicants to establish residence in those states. We also provide reasonable accommodations for applicants needing assistance in the hiring process.

In this role, you will be considered for substitute and full‑term class assignments as the department’s needs arise.

Who We Are Looking For

Interested candidates should list the current PCC courses you would be able to teach and review the PCC Course Catalog for this subject area.

Instructor Qualifications
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) or Medical Doctor with AAO Certification in Ophthalmology
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology or related field
  • Minimum five (5) years of clinical work experience in an ophthalmic practice
  • For OMT 281 Ophthalmic Imaging: credential as COT or COMT
  • Preferred additional credentials: Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA), Registered Ophthalmic Ultrasound Biometrist (ROUB), or Certified Diagnostic Ophthalmic Sonographer (CDOS)
  • Minimum five (5) years of clinical work experience in an ophthalmic practice for OMT 281
Faculty Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties of a certified ophthalmic technician
  • Support students by assessing clinical skills, providing guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback
  • Follow all Eye Technician Program and college rules and policies, including FERPA and OSHA regulations
  • Maintain a safe and integrity‑based laboratory environment and report injuries or unsafe behaviors
  • Evaluate and grade student work, laboratory assignments, and activities
  • Support faculty by restocking laboratory supplies, performing inventory, and providing feedback on student performance
  • Promote professionalism by modeling appropriate behaviors inside and outside the classroom or clinical lab setting
  • Exhibit professional conduct, punctuality, approachability, positive attitude, and respect for faculty and students
  • Create a supportive, constructive, and engaging learning environment
  • Identify at‑risk students and provide additional support, guidance, and attention
  • Participate in regular communication with the program director and other faculty members
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and teamwork abilities
Note Regarding Academic Credentials

Official transcripts are required within two weeks of an offer date for the degrees required in the Instructor Qualifications. Instructors must have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a foreign institution with equivalent accreditation. Transcripts from foreign institutions will be evaluated by agencies recognized by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
