Job summary

Jacob A Riis Neighborhood Settlement seeks experienced, flexible Substitute ESOL instructors for on-call coverage in adult ESOL classes. Classes run mornings and evenings at sites in Long Island City, Astoria, and Jackson Heights, with roles in-person during scheduled times.

Ideal candidates provide student-centered, interactive instruction, adapt readily to different proficiency levels, and support program staff when regular instructors return. Training is provided.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree and 2+ years relevant teaching experience.
• Masters in TESOL and/or Education preferred.
• Ability to adapt lesson plans to program needs and create original plans.
• Strong command of English grammar and clear explanation of tenses and parts of speech.
• Able to work independently and collaboratively with a team.

Responsibilities

• Provide engaging ESOL instruction for adult learners at multiple levels.
• Follow and adapt lesson plans; modify activities when substitutes are needed.
• Facilitate authentic language practice through interactive activities.
• Use a communicative, contextualized approach with daily life topics.
• Maintain a welcoming, respectful classroom environment encouraging participation.
• Assist with attendance, materials prep, and documentation as required.
