Job summary

Tacoma Public Schools is seeking a dedicated School Crossing Guard to help elementary students cross streets safely. You will monitor traffic flow, use signals to stop vehicles, and ensure students’ safety at crosswalks.

The position involves up to 2 hours per day, with hours and schedule set by the building administrator. Training and knowledge of crosswalk safety policies are desired; you will work with a diverse student population and staff.

Qualifications

• Completion of district training for school crossing guards is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of building policies and procedures related to crosswalk safety.
• Ability to work cooperatively with building staff.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work and student relationships with a variety of people in a multi-cultural, diverse socio-economic setting.

Responsibilities

• Stops oncoming traffic using a flag to permit students to cross the street safely and monitors traffic flow for minimal disruption.
• Monitors students’ activities and behavior while approaching crosswalk and remains alert for unsafe situations.
• Reports inappropriate student behavior and vehicles that fail to stop when signaled.
