Job summary

TRIO Talent Search at the University of South Dakota has an opening for a part-time (20 hours/week) 10-month advisor at the Crow Creek Area Schools. This position assists Talent Search participants in identifying, preparing for, and attaining their educational goals, helping them graduate high school and enroll in postsecondary education.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, counseling, business administration or related field is required.
• Experience working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
• Valid driver’s license to attend staff meetings and professional development

Responsibilities

• Maintain cooperative relationships with Crow Creek Area Schools and communities through visits with students and collaboration with schools, staff and parents.
• Work in community schools 3-4 days per week.
• Meet Talent Search participants weekly in class or small group meetings or individual visits.
• Plan and carry out activities to help students graduate high school and pursue postsecondary education.
• Provide academic assistance including study skills and goal setting; arrange tutoring as needed.
• Disseminate information on postsecondary institutions, financial aid, admissions, housing, and academic programs.
• Arrange campus visits to colleges for TRIO Talent Search participants.
• Meet with students’ parents through letters, visits, or conferences.
• Maintain a record-keeping system documenting student assistance and counselor activity.
