South Bay Youth Changemakers in San Jose, CA is seeking a part-time Civic Engagement Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and activate volunteers for election protection, voter turnout, and leadership development. ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

South Bay Youth Changemakers is a fiscally sponsored project of Chinese Progressive Association. South Bay Youth Changemakers is a youth-led community organization building Asian American political power in the South Bay (Santa Clara County). Through community organizing, civic engagement, and narrative work, South Bay Youth Changemakers empowers young people to build more just and sustainable communities.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Civic Engagement Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting and activating volunteers to participate in our organizational activities this fall relating to election protection, voter turnout, and leadership development. The Volunteer Organizer will conduct outreach to new potential volunteers (both youth and adults), activate our existing list of leaders, and motivate the broader community to join our movement. This role would also support supervising volunteers in door knocking and phone banking to Asian American and Pacific Islander voters.

The Civic Engagement Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Lead Youth Organizer.

PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Recruit, turnout, coach, and conduct reminder calls to activate volunteers and members in existing base
  • Phone bank past volunteers and contact lists to mobilize to Volunteer Days
  • Email and text follow-up when needed
• Outreach and recruit to new volunteers
  • Contact professors and allies to set up class presentations, tabling, etc.
  • Help reach out to ally organizations to join our volunteer door knock days
• Plan and Lead Volunteer Days
  • Work with field staff to develop outreach and mobilization plans
  • Work with digital comms staff to promote volunteer opportunities
  • Plan and Prep for Trainings
• Prep materials for door knock events
• Train, supervise and help manage volunteers at outreach events
• Complete daily reports based on results from the outreach team
• Provide coaching and monitoring of outreach progress, including contact rate and ID rate
• Provide support and troubleshooting for technology used by the outreach team.

SCHEDULE

Must be available to work on these specific dates. Other days of the week would be flexible and set up with the supervisor after orientation.

REQUIREMENTS

• Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work on some weekends
• Must be able to follow a script and provide accurate information to voters
• Must arrive at the canvassing location on the correct date and time and canvass during the designated times.
• Must have access to and be able to use a cellphone and computer to accurately record responses.
• Must be able to read a map on the canvassing app.
• Must have strong verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal communication skills; maintaining a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple demands and prioritize accordingly
• Strong oral communication skills on the phone and in person
• Basic skills with technology in order to submit information about canvassing
• A passion for social justice issues and advocating on AAPI community issues
• Ability to work well with a team, take direction and feedback, and share skills and knowledge, and have a positive attitude
• Has a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous experience in canvassing preferred, but not required
• Experience leading or managing volunteers
• Can use their own cell phone and data for outreach.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions; able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds, etc. Must be able to stretch, bend, kneel, twist, squat, reach above or below the shoulder, push, grasp, and lift up to 20 pounds. Able to walk, drive, write, stand, and sit. Ability to walk for at least 3.5 hours daily to canvas door-to-door. This will be hybrid in-person and remote based with in person work in Santa Clara County, primarily in San Jose and Milpitas.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

This is a temporary part-time position with no benefits except those required by law, with a $26 hourly rate. This position is non-exempt. This position is roughly 20 hours per week (No more than 150 hours). The position will approximately start on September 28, 2026, and end on November 13, 2026.
